Goals of Jennie Stuart Health Nurse Extern Program
- Provide prelicensure nursing students an opportunity to gain additional experience to enhance their preparation as a future licensed nurse under the supervision of experienced registered nurse in the healthcare setting.
- Provide and support prelicensure nursing students experiences in the most realistic setting possible following legal and safety restrictions for purposes of patient safety and professionalism by:

Strengthening assessment and clinical skills

Developing communication, time management, and critical thinking skills

Expanding knowledge of the professional nurses role

Building confidence in applying the skills they have learned in the academic environment
- Encourage retention of nursing graduates through provision of supplemental practice experience with the workplace.
Nurse Extern Eligibility
- Candidate must be currently enrolled in an approved school of nursing program within the United States preparing candidates for registered nursing licensure.
- Successfully completed, at a minimum, the second semester of nursing school.
- Candidates must be in good standing of the school of nursing with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Current BLS certification. AHA or American Red Cross HealthCare Provider.
Nurse Extern Requirements
- Candidate must be willing to work 36-40 hours a week during the 10-week summer program.
